Dear Lady Unmentionable...

Having recently been given the challenge to spice up my lingerie-loving wife's 'dress up' wardrobe, perhaps you could help me with my quest...

 1. Should i always get a suspender belt to go with corsets or basques or stick to ones that come with straps on them?

2. Can you recommend leather lingerie that is classy and not trashy? (and not £100!)

3. Are there any accessories to go with outfits i should be looking at?

Many thanks for any advice, it can be a daunting prospect!

Yours hopefully,

Lacy McThong

Dear Lacy McThong,

What a challenge! I like your wife’s style and what an interesting way to ‘spice’ things up.

Suspender belts are great fun as well as useful. Two in one! I always encourage the use of suspender belts as they can be a great tease in the bedroom. However, I think suspender belts should be a part of everyday wardrobe too. So if you do get your wife some suspender belts make sure you get some nice stockings too! I love the Bettie Page polka dot ones…but by far the most popular are the Cervin Stockings.

Cervin offer various stocking colours which can be matched with your wife’s outfit. And stockings are also a thrill inside and outside of the bedroom.

Suspender belts and girdles can be easy to match other items to. Playful Promises offer a black option, Jasmine, which I lurve. And this can be matched with a black corset, a black basque etc. You may want to consider longline girdles, such as the ones Kiss Me Deadly offer. These are almost a mixture of basque, corset and suspender belt – gripping!

In answer to your first question; definitely get a mixture! Make sure your wife has a choice of corsets, suspender belts and basques. Some with suspenders, and some without. That way she can pick and mix and you’ll get some lovely surprises every time!

Women easily change their mind, therefore their wardrobe needs to be adaptable. Having a variety of props, accessories, pieces of lingerie means more to choose from, more opportunities to mix and match and more special occasions for you! My lingerie lock-up reads like an encyclopedia, with several volumes. I have so much choice in my closet, I can create new outfits all the time from just what I own. Think Mix and Match.

In response to your second question, leather lingerie can be a difficult one and your budget is tight! I would suggest looking into leather accessories, such as cuffs and ties that way you get more bang for your buck, so to speak.

I would recommend Paul Seville’s leather gauntlets. A little pricey, but they are real leather, and this offers you leather lingerie and accessories in one go. They look great and what a great weekend ahead for you both! Allure Lingerie offer a tasteful lace and leather bra and brief set, rather cute and not just a bedroom ensemble.

There are also various bra and brief sets with leather, leather and chain, leather and pain, around the £50 budget. Perhaps not what most would call tasteful, but it depends what you are looking for and what occasion.

Online is a brilliant place to shop for these, search on google and google shopping and you will also find a large amount to offer in leather corsetry, waspies and accessories.

With regards to accessories, other than the stockings mentioned above, I think you should be considering nipple tassels and eye masks. Stephanie Loungewear offers some beautiful pieces.

I think they make ideal gifts, stocking fillers, a little something here and there and with so much variety and being inexpensive they are great treats.

There are some superb eye masks around from silks to laces to antique masks to blindfolds and more. Sleek lace eye masks can be tantalising but are also a key accessory for travelling and for sleepless nights.

If you like the lacy theme, then you can carry this on with lace gloves. Again you can get inexpensive versions on the high street, vintage ones that will cost a little more and bespoke pairs for a ridiculous amount. But gloves are great part of the strip-tease act and a must-have wardrobe accessory.

We wish you luck with your quest and I’m keen to know what you uncover!

Dear Lady Unmentionable...

Why do my boyfriends shy away from buying me lingerie?

I love lingerie, and I enjoy wearing lingerie for bedroom partners, however I have never received lingerie from any men in my life no matter how many hints I drop.

What can I do?

From

LackingLingerie, 24 from London

Dear LackingLingerie,

Thank you for a very worthwhile topic.

Why do blokes shy away from lingerie gifts, lingerie shops and lingerie shopping?

Although I myself regularly receive lingerie gifts from gentlemen, this is a question that pops up among friends.

In the past I have heard such excuses such as;

“I don’t want anyone I know to see me in the shop…”

“The boutique girls thought I was a pervert…”

“I don’t know your size, I’d just get it wrong and you’d hate me for it.”

However, these excuses are petty and these, in my mind, are simply men with their tails between their legs running away from responsibility.

So what if your friends or colleagues see you in a lingerie shop, clearly they are also in there doing the same thing. Surely a real man isn’t shy to admit he can confidently walk into a lingerie store and browse to buy something nice for a girl? And would this not prove to friends that he has a rather successful sex-life. I would be bragging about this to my macho male mates.

Lingerie boutique girls are happy to help any gentleman who is looking to purchase something whether as a gift for a girlfriend, something for themselves or even if it’s for other reasons… Lingerie shop girls have seen it all and there is nothing to be shy about buying lingerie for a girlfriend.

Remember that store assistants are trained to help with sizing and are likely to help you with sizing problems as well as picking out popular styles, matching accessories and even showing you how to wear pieces.

The sizing issue is most likely the best excuse. However, most stores have a 14-28 day exchange policy. So even if the guy doesn’t have a clue of your bra size he can purchase a size and he or you can exchange it later. Lingerie stores also offer plenty of treats and goodies that do not require the mathematical genius of a bra size expert. Briefs, triangle bras, nightwear and gifting pieces, no excuse, just pick one.

With the popularity of online shopping, men can shop for lingerie in the comfort and serenity of their own home. No one will see them, no one will know, and lets be honest they’ve probably browsed for similar if not more exciting things on the net in the past. Men are able to buy lingerie online, get it sent to them and make it look like they’ve walked into a store…again they have no excuse.

Playful Promises often team up with voucher deals such as Living Social. So if the man is really too shy or too dim to buy lingerie he can buy gift vouchers and still get away with it.

LackingLingerie, I would say that the men you date love your playmate aspect but aren’t man enough to be your playmate! If they can’t buy lingerie, what else will they shy away from in later years?

And men…get off your backsides! When you don’t know what to buy a girlfriend for a birthday, anniversary, valentines day or any non-special days –THINK LINGERIE.

Pin-up Queen; Bettie Page

Bettie Page; Pin-up Queen, glamour icon and underground bondage model. This surreal character crops up every now an again with an increased fan-base and a constant need to inspire the lingerie industry.

Secrets in Lace have been designing the Bettie Page lingerie collection inspired by her 1950’s photographs and stills making sure to remain true to the style of the era and the prints Bettie loved.

Playful Promises Boutique has been selling pieces from the very popular Bettie Page lingerie line for a while and the seamed stockings are one of our more popular items. We’re expanding the Bettie Page line to also feature online, but where does a pin-up’s career even begin?

Bettie Page always desired to be in the spotlight, she moved to New York after her first divorce to find work as an actress, but by day supported herself working as a secretary.

Whilst out walking one day she came across enthusiast photographer Jerry Tibbs. He put together her first pin-up portfolio and her career as a pin-up was launched.

By the 1940’s, pornography was illegal, therefore ‘camera clubs’ were invented to bypass the pornography laws. Bettie became a glamour model and camera club model posing nude on many occasions. Her lack of inhibitions brought her a great amount of work and landed her in men’s magazines of the era such as Wink, Titter and Beauty Parade.

Often the camera club models provided their own lingerie which has been an inspiration to many faux retro lingerie designers. Many pieces would have been made by the models themselves; in particular Bettie had a knack for combining fashionable prints with contemporary styling. An amazing insight into lingerie fashion of the era.

1952 was the year her pin-up career really begun as she worked alongside Irving Klaw who produced mail-order photographs. Here images of a pin-up, bondage or sadomasochist theme were produced and these images shot Bettie Page to stardom.

Bettie became a famous bondage model appearing in photographs, short-films and stills that Klaw’s customers requested. Although none of Klaw’s and pages work featured nudity or scenes of overtly sexual content they did feature fetish scenarios including abduction, domination, bondage, tying up and more. We’ll let your mind wonder.

Incredible lingerie fashions were used from tight leather costumes to lacy and silky nightwear as well as high-heel shoes and lace-up boots.

Furthermore Bettie appeared in several burlesque films made by Irving Klaw including Teasearama and Varietease. These films including dance routines and several striptease artists.

In 1954 a chance meeting whilst on holiday in Miami lead to a collaboration with Bunny Yeager. A model turned photographer, Bunny Yeager set-up a photo-session in a Florida nature reserve featuring two beautiful cheetahs. The ‘Jungle Bettie’ shots are some of her most celebrated images, she models a home-made leopard print bikini set as well as some renown nude shots too.

Bunny Yeager also set-up a photo session for images she later sent to Hugh Hefner, founder of Playboy. The image, of Bettie in a Father Christmas hat winking at the camera, was chosen to be ‘Playmate of the Month centrefold’ in the Playboy magazine in January of 1955. This feature led her to be voted as ‘Miss Pin-up Girl of the World’.

Although it seems Bettie’s modelling career was short-lived she was one of the most famous models of the period and her career lasted longer than most of the industry individuals. She retired from her pin-up career and became a born-again Christian.

Since the 1950’s Bettie’s images have kept re-surfacing creating a cult following and an ever growing fan-base. Books have been published and more recently biographies and films have been made.

Bettie herself was in and out of the lime-light but was rumoured to not have been earning any money from the images used. Her photographs, films and stills have inspired generation after generation and her bondage scenes are still sought-after.

If, like us at Playful Promises, you are mesmerised by this intriguing character then take a look at the Bettie Page inspired lingerie and stockings and perhaps you can create your own Jungle Bettie photographs!

Vintage Southbank 2011

It has been a rather busy (not to mention hot!) weekend for us at Playful Promises! While Emma was off gallivanting in New York at the Curve lingerie show, I headed down to the Southbank to check out the Vintage festival. Fun and frolics were aplenty in this celebration of all things 1920s to the 80s! Food, music, games and, most importantly, shopping were packed onto the riverside promenade, attracting a vast amount of families and vintage fanatics.

The Vintage Village consisted of dozens of stalls packed full of authentic vintage and vintage inspired clothes, shoes, hats, bags, furniture and music! Ranging from big brands to avid collectors; drawing in customers of all ages. Food and drink had not been forgotten, with old-time popcorn vendors, traditional fish and chips, ice cream trucks and the stunning Art deco mobile cocktail lounge. There was even a hair and beauty salon dedicated to recreating era-specific styles for the festival-goers!

The gorgeous Stephanie Jay in our Vintage Stitch Overbust corset!

One of the big draws of the day (also, my favourite event!) was The Chap Olympiad, an eccentric sporting event for the well-groomed and waistcoated. Chaps and chapettes compete in a range of games designed to test their cad skills, such as sandwich tossing and butler baiting, with points added for devilish trickery and maintaining one's finesse. Audience-members are actively encouraged to join in, resulting in much merriment – I was almost dragged into sandwich tossing, but declined gracefully as I would not want to spoil my training for next year!

The contestants celebrate the end of a tiring battle of tug-o-moustache, in which the chapettes were victorious!

Introductions...

You may have seen me pictured in the lasts gossip mags, you may have seen me passing through the hottest spots in London. I’m a daring thirty-something socialite, the original ‘it-girl’, and I’m here to answer your lingerie related questions.

I love eccentric fashion, I love it more when I can show a little leg, a little thigh and if I can bare a little more when I’m going out I will.

If you hadn’t guessed already, lingerie is more outerwear than underwear, lingerie is a huge consideration for my wardrobe. I collect all the latest lingerie brands, with key pieces from Agent Provocateur, Marlies Dekkers, Playful Promises, What Katie Did, Victoria’s secrets and many more. I love vintage pieces too, who doesn’t?

My swimwear needs to be the latest cut-out design, be adorned with expensive trims and detailing. My drawers are filled with pieces that I only wear once, pieces that can’t be washed – but I have so many I never need to wash them anyway!

Playful Promises have invited me to be their Lingerie Patron, an agony aunt if you please. They’ve given me a rather curvaceous illustration, and I’m wearing the fab showgirl briefs that Emma gave me a few weeks ago. Great for Burlesque bedroom acts ; )

I’m here to answer the many questions you girls and boys may have about lingerie. Anything from how to wear it (what I’m best at), to tender loving care lingerie may need, and anything in between. Don’t be shy, I’m certainly no shrinking violet.

Are you bursting out of your bra with a question? Is your thong in a knot? Is your head spinning? (you should loosen your corset then)

If your knickers are in a twist, then you need to email me at knickersinatwist@playfulpromises.com

Questions will be answered on my blog, if you request to be kept anonymous we’ll respect that or entice us with a saucy pseudonym.
